About Charmed

Charmed is an early-stage startup building AI-powered game development tools. We are helping game studios develop larger, more complex, more fun worlds by making it easier to explore, communicate, and extend their creative visions.

Our first products target specific content production bottlenecks that plague indie studios across level, character, and narrative design. We are investing in R&D to ensure that we are integrating lessons learned in cutting-edge academic research and that our tools exceed the high quality expectations of both professional game designers and gamers. Our users will direct our software the same way they direct their creative teams- except they’ll get to see the results in real-time.

These are early days for Charmed. We’re looking for talented engineers and scientists who are as excited as we are to be at the forefront of the AI-assisted creativity revolution while helping designers make better games!

About the Founding MLE/Applied Scientist Role

As the first dedicated MLE/Applied Scientist at Charmed, you will lead the development of the AI systems that power our products. In this role, you will have broad scope, including generative AI, computer graphics, and natural language processing. You will leverage current technologies like LLMs and diffusion models and make sure that Charmed is up-to-date with fast-moving research in the field. You will adapt and develop state-of-the-art research to meet the high quality standards required by game designers and their gamer audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and adapt the latest techniques in deep learning and generative AI research to expand the capabilities of our game development platform across all relevant modes (text, image, animation, music, SFX, etc).
  • Communicate the capabilities and limitations of existing techniques and describe the scope of work necessary to productize them.
  • Prepare models and systems to:
    • Produce novel textures for existing game geometries
    • Author descriptions, backstories, motivations, and dialog for game characters
    • Augment level design processes
  • Design the end-to-end data gathering and training processes to improve proprietary models and algorithms given customer usage data.
  • Conduct open-ended investigations to improve the quality of collected data, including but not limited to, semi-supervised learning and human-in-the-loop machine learning.

Qualifications

  • Care deeply about AI and be passionate about enhancing the creativity and productivity of game developers.
  • Interest in video games and video game development.
  • Proven expertise shipping AI software using pytorch
  • Seattle area based or willing to relocate. (We plan to operate using a hybrid model with 3 in-office days weekly.)
  • Proven experience designing models from scratch that can be iterated on in production settings
  • Flexibility and a level of comfort with early-stage iterating and moving fast
  • Bias for action and a drive for results
  • BS in computer science, mathematics, or a similar field; MS preferred with a focus in ML/AI but not required.

Don’t meet every single requirement listed above? That's ok. If you’re excited about this role and our mission, but your experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification listed here, we encourage you to apply anyways. You may be the right candidate for this or other roles within the broader MVL portfolio.

We are an equal opportunity employer and highly value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
