Pendulum has an opportunity for a talented engineering leader and fearless problem solver to build our engineering department and lead development and delivery of Pendulum's MVP and flagship products.

The Vice President of Engineering at Pendulum will work with our data science and design teams to chart the technical path for our enterprise-class system combining machine learning, search, social media, design and data display. This is a multi-dimensional engineering role requiring solid planning, broad engineering skills, hands-on execution, thoughtful leadership, and articulate engagement with stakeholders.

Pendulum's customers are fortune 500 companies and government agencies that have high expectations for quality and performance. Solving the puzzle of incrementally delivering enterprise class software while simultaneously laying out and filling in the technical roadmap is a key challenge of this role.

As one of the first hires at a venture-track company, this role provides an opportunity to grow with the company and to have real impact with enormous upside. 

Qualifications and experience

  • Leadership:  brings a convincing ability to work across groups at a high level to build a vision, coordinate resources and plans and translate those into team action. Able to inspire creative, thoughtful and energetic contributions from others.
  • Execution:  exhibits greatness at setting goals, taking risks, being and holding others accountable, celebrating success and managing the misses.
  • Bias for action:  possesses strong decision making ability.  Able to spot shortcuts, iterate  quickly and knows how to combine research processes with engineering development in a way that can deliver and amaze.
  • Communication:  is a clear communicator able to build rapport across company functions and with company leadership.  Sets expectations, demonstrates accountability and establishes trust and admiration.
  • Technology:  has established broad and deep technical skills, including multi-language coding (e.g. Java, Scala, C#, python, Node.js, sql/nosql), full stack architecture, cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, GCP), familiarity with machine learning practices (ML expertise not required), quality and security coding practices, and standard lifecycle/project management tools.
  • Recruiting:  experienced at recruiting, interviewing and hiring engineers and data scientists. Familiar with interviewing best practices, holding a high bar, and using a company and team story to attract stellar candidates.
  • Culture:  outstanding character, team player, always learning, curious, good judgement, scrappy, smart, good humored and a tolerance for ambiguity.
  • BS or better in computer science, engineering or related field 
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in software development and 2 years in engineering leadership or management
  • Prior startup experience is preferred
